April can be a trying month for people with autism. It’s a time when some of the biggest monuments “Light It Up Blue” and people are encouraged to walk, donate and just show up in support of autism. Most families with a child who has special needs know full well the concept of it taking a village. From medical professionals to educators and deep into our communities, we create a team of people to help. But within our family is where the deepest well of support and care usually emerges.

For many special needs parents, taking time out to breathe, reconnect and pamper themselves is a little known luxury. It’s easy and perhaps tempting to get caught up in the chaos of daily life where everything else is urgent except you. But you and your needs matter more than you may realize.

Many special needs kids are very talented, and have a lot to contribute to society. The sad reality, however, is that most people don’t know enough about these kids so they fail to see how unique they are. Instead of focusing on how special needs kids are different, it’s time to highlight their gifts and strengths.
