Transitioning from Childhood
to Adulthood with Confidence

The Challenge

Alex’s difficulty in understanding certain dangers, combined with a limited grasp of verbal language, made it incredibly challenging for his family to ensure the safety and care he needed.

When Alex was younger, he would often elope when he was upset or overwhelmed, both from his elementary school teachers or during family outings. If he were to get away he wouldn’t answer to the call of his name and he wouldn’t be able to ask for help or tell anyone his name.

Tamara, Alex’s mother, recounts her experience:

These episodes were not only distressing but also a constant obstacle to our family’s ability to engage in day-to-day activities with the confidence and peace of mind that others may take for granted.

As Alex grew older and began attending middle school, he no longer eloped, but the transition to attending different classes introduced a new set of challenges that involved making sure he made it to each classroom throughout the day, as well as safely participating in field trips. Since he began high school, Tamara shares that the increasing demands and expectations have been a source of frustration for Alex, spawning renewed concern over his elopement.

Alex is a curious and adventurous young man diagnosed with autism. He has difficulty understanding certain dangers and has a limited grasp of verbal language, making it challenging for his family to ensure his safety and provide him with the care he needs.

The Solution

Motivated by a deep desire to improve his safety, Alex’s family sought out help in the form of assistive technology and discovered the AngelSense device.

“When I found AngelSense online and it showed that it was specifically for those with special needs, I immediately ordered it. That I could track him on his bus ride, get alerts for arrivals and exits, call and hear how he was doing, and that he could wear it attached to his clothes with his sensory aversions taken into account were all paramount.”

AngelSense has proven to be a comprehensive and adaptable solution that successfully meets Alex’s changing needs between childhood, through adolescence, and into young adulthood.

Field trips, family outings, going to the grocery store, going to the park– all of these are things that we avoided.

Runner Mode + Alarm

Activating Runner Mode during an elopement provided Alex’s parents with enhanced tracking and location updates every 10 seconds. In case he was hiding or lost in a crowded environment, a remote alarm could be used from any distance to set off a clearly audible signal to help find him.

Safe Ride Monitoring

The proactive safe-ride monitoring features in the AngelSense device alert Alex’s parents every time he gets on or off a school bus, including a live map that shows his exact route in real-time with an updated ETA.

See My Location

This feature shows where a parent is located in relation to their child, so they can get directions to them in the shortest time possible. When Alex was 6 years old and out with a caregiver, their car was struck by another driver and Alex required medical attention. His parents were able to use the See My Location feature to immediately drive straight to the accident site while communicating with the paramedics.

Assistive Speakerphone

Using the assistive speakerphone feature with automatic pickup meant that Tamara could easily check in on Alex, in ways that a regular smartphone would not be equipped to accommodate.

Measurable Results

  • Simplified Alex’s daily routines, fostering independence and skill development in both home and school environments.
  • Assisted and in some cases entirely averted emergency situations including wandering, elopement, and accidents.
  • Enabled Alex to safely transition from Elementary School, to Middle School, and High School, and even get his first summer job.

A Safely Independent Future

AngelSense Assistive Technology has become an indispensable tool for Alex, empowering him to navigate life on his own terms and enriching his experiences.

From his first days in elementary school, through high school and even his first summer job, Alex has used the technology to lay down foundations that have enabled him to gradually acclimate to the outside world.

As Tamara proudly shares –

I was able to drop him off at his first day of work with his caregiver and call to listen in and see how he was handling a whole new world and people that he had never met before. Him walking into all of this without me by his side was the biggest stride into even more independence for him in the future. Safely independent.

Tamara, Alex's mom

Allowing him to walk more than a few feet away from me gave me the opportunity to teach him to come back to me when his name is called or to slow down and stop to wait for me. I would not have had the chance to work on this essential skill without AngelSense because finding him if he had run off would have been near impossible.

Having AngelSense while he continues to explore the world around him is so helpful in keeping him safe while he stretches his comfort zone and gains more confidence.
