Bergen County’s
Community-Centered
Shift in Public Safety

The Challenge

Before adopting AngelSense, Bergen County families dealing with wandering and elopement, were frequently overwhelmed, with few preventative options. The Sheriff’s Office relied on Project Lifesaver, which offered basic tracking and came with critical limitations: it required specialized equipment, constant battery maintenance, and law enforcement activation for every search.

Families had no real-time access to their loved ones’ locations and were entirely dependent on emergency responders. Every incident meant dispatching officers, consuming time and resources, and increasing the stress on already vulnerable families.

The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office serves a large population of families impacted by autism and dementia. With frequent elopement incidents, they sought a better way to protect vulnerable individuals while easing the burden on emergency services.

The Solution

The Sheriff’s Office wanted a better way that not only improved safety outcomes but also restored a sense of control to families. They found it in AngelSense, an AI-powered GPS technology that includes a wearable device with an auto-pickup speakerphone for two-way communication.

Through their partnership with AngelSense, the Community Outreach Unit now equips families with a personal, powerful assistive technology designed to put safety directly in their hands.

Live GPS Tracking: Continuous real-time tracking allows families to instantly locate their loved ones, minimizing delays and preventing emergencies from escalating.

Two-Way Speakerphone: Direct communication between families and their loved ones offers immediate reassurance, improves response time, and eliminates unnecessary emergency dispatches

Proactive Alerts: Instant notifications for unexpected movements, location changes, or late arrivals help caregivers act fast in case of any deviations from the norm.

Share Live Location: Caregivers can instantly share a secure link with first responders, giving them live access to the individual’s exact location from any smart device.

Angel Photo: The app displays the individual’s photo on the caregiver’s map and includes it when activating First Responders or Share Live Location, helping search teams identify them faster in a crisis.

Shifting the Safety Model

For Bergen County, switching from Project Lifesaver to AngelSense wasn’t just about adopting new technology, it was about transforming their approach to public safety.

Families are now empowered with continuous live tracking, instant proactive alerts, and new ways of communication. Officers remain available for support but are no longer the only line of defense when minutes matter most.

By putting safety tools directly in families’ hands, the Sheriff’s Office reduced emergencies, improved outcomes, and built a more resilient, connected community.
